Crow social life

  • Cooperative breeding: there’s the breeding pair (parents) and helpers (offsprings from previous years).
    • Only 9% bird species breed cooperatively
    • Crows might stay at home for as long as 6 years
    • Can also start their own family at about 3 years old
  • Eggs hatch in ≈18 days
  • Altricial (instead of precocial like chicken): blind and helpless when hatched
  • Can dive bomb whoever gets close to fledglings
  • Fall: fledglings → juveniles, large foraging parties
  • Winter: really big gathering groups called crow roosts (up to 2 million birds)
  • Spring: back to breeding territories
  • Crow funeral: many crows gather to check out the area, learn about danger, and form memories
