what to do with mind

  • begin by focusing attention on breath
  • Difference between being aware of a thought vs thinking a thought:
    • Being aware: a distance between the thought and awareness to it, light, not leading to a the next thought in the chain
    • Deep concentration can slow down thought process and speed up awareness of it, that’s why using breath as a reference point
  • Why choose breath for the reference point: portable, cheap, moves in cycles so it mimics life, teaches balance between involuntary process and conscious will (you can slow it down), nostril is the nexus between inner and outer worlds, common to all living things, is a present moment event.
  • First step: find the breath, ie notice the point with most distinct sensation of passing air. then focus on the spot
  • Don’t control the breath because forced effort inhibits concentration
    • Eventually you will feel no impulse to control the breath and learned a lesson about impulse to control
